What happened now in Najaf is very dangerous, that our people are killed by this shelling and by using this force. This is not the right way to solve our problems, that is what we need (that is the message) to take from our decision." 19. Vehicles drive past on street Amarah - 10 August 2004 20. Various militia on streets with RPG 21. Gunmen shoots in the air 23. Group with RPG fire mortar shell - fire is returned STORYLINE: Basra's deputy governor said oil exports were halted on Tuesday in protest at the ongoing violence in Najaf despite contradictory statements from the British army. Basra deputy governor Salam Audeh told Associated Press Television News that pumping to the southern port of Basra the country's main export outlet was halted to sent a message to Baghdad to contain the violence. An official with the South Oil Company on Monday also said production was halted because of militant threats to infrastructure. But British Army Captain Hisham Halawi had a contradictory message, telling reporters that while a South Oil Company official had been threatened, production continued unabated and the situation in Basra had calmed down. About 1.8 million barrels per day, or 90 percent of Iraq's exports, move through Basra, and any shutdown in the flow of Iraq's main money earner would badly hamper reconstruction efforts. Iraq's other export line from the north to Turkey is already out of operation. Clashes intensified around Basra on Tuesday, where a day earlier a British soldier was killed and several others wounded in fighting with militia near the cleric's office. Also on Tuesday, in the southern city of Amarah, militants loyal to the radical Shi'ite cleric Muqtadar al-Sadr roamed the streets. Toting rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons they chanted their support for the cleric. In one part of town, insurgents launched mortar rounds from a garden. Fire was returned on them immediately afterwards causing the fighters to duck for cover.
