The City of Hickory proudly presented the Business. Well Crafted. Legacy Award to WHKY on Tuesday, Dec. 16, during the Hickory City Council meeting. Business and Community Development Manager Dave Leonetti presented the award on behalf of the City’s Business Development Committee (BDC), recognizing WHKY for 85 years of community-focused news, entertainment, and service to the greater Hickory metro. Founded on June 10, 1940, WHKY is a veteran-owned, fourth-generation, family-run radio station that has remained a cornerstone of the Unifour region. As one of the longest-running family-owned stations in the United States, WHKY has consistently delivered on its mission to connect, inform, and celebrate the Hickory community. Over the decades, WHKY has evolved to meet the changing needs of its audience. The station transitioned from music to an all-talk format in 1987, later expanding into television with WHKY-TV and embracing both digital and analog broadcasting technologies. Despite these changes, WHKY has remained steadfast in its commitment to amplifying local voices, promoting small businesses, and providing reliable information that supports a “Life. Well Crafted.” in Hickory. WHKY plays an active role in advancing Hickory’s economic and cultural vitality. The station regularly features new and growing businesses, shares workforce development opportunities, and encourages residents to shop local. WHKY also hosts conversations with city leaders, educational institutions, and civic organizations to align the community with key initiatives such as downtown revitalization, tourism, and public service. Following Hurricane Helene, WHKY mobilized its platform to connect volunteers, donations, and resources, demonstrating its deep-rooted commitment to community resilience. The station’s dedication to ethical journalism is reflected in its clear separation of news and advertising, transparent policies, and inclusive programming that reflects the diversity of Hickory. Signature initiatives like “Military Monday” connect veterans and their families with local services, while recurring civic spotlights elevate the work of nonprofits and public agencies. WHKY’s hands-on approach to community engagement ensures that residents remain informed, connected, and proud to call Hickory home. The City of Hickory and the Business Development Committee congratulate WHKY on this milestone and thank the Long family and WHKY team for their enduring legacy of service.
