D., Harvard University; D. Phil., Oxford University) was a full professor in the Divinity School at the University of Chicago from 1978 to 2018 and is the author of many translations of Sanskrit texts as well as books about Hindu mythology and cross-cultural mythology, particularly about illusion, animals, gender and sex, including "The Ring of Truth and Other Myths of Sex and Jewelry." Her most recent books are "After the War: The Last Books of the Mahabharata" (2022) and "An American Girl in India: Letters from 1963-64" (2022).
