From Command Performance program #197, recorded on Oct 25, 1945. I can't find any info on this song anywhere else (perhaps it's a Mel Tormé original?), but it has some "samples" of "I'll Never Smile Again" (Ruth Lowe) and "(I've Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo" (Mack Gordon and Harry Warren). They came in at #14 in Down Beat mag's 1945 poll for best vocal group, rose all the way to #4 in 1946, and fell back to #5 in 1947. In late 1946, Ginny O'Connor left to join the Mellolarks, who were then singing with Tex Beneke's Glenn Miller Orchestra—which is where she met her future husband, Henry Mancini. Mel Torme went solo not long after. It seems that Les Baxter and Bernie Parke tried to keep the Meltones alive into late 1947, bringing in Leo Dukehorn (of the Smart Set) and Dottie Lyttle (of the Lyttle sisters). They recorded four sides with Bob Hayward on the Black & White label, but for some reason or another (maybe something contractual?), they ended up being credited as "the Melotones." Despite their popularity, they were often accused of singing out-of-tune. There are a few moments in this performance where I can hear why. Ambitious arrangements, though.
