(7 Sep 2017) TOM FORD LOOKED TO CAPTURE THE ENERGY OF 90'S FASHION WITH HIS LATEST COLLECTION Tom Ford says he looked backwards for his Spring 2018 collection, to the 90's. "I was trying you know for a certain energy that my collections had at Gucci in the 90's," said the designer backstage Wednesday (6 SEPT. 2017) after his runway show that kicked off New York Fashion Week. "I didn't want to copy that or recreate that but there was an energy to them that I've been living in LA for awhile now and I've started to feel that way again. You know it's a different city than London, you feel differently, you want to dress in a different way, color starts to feel different to you than it did when I was living in London and there are a lot of sort of 90's things floating around in fashion right now and I thought, 'Well, I know how to do that.' The other thing is there's another thing going on in fashion right now which is a kind of more is more is more is more is more is more is more. I wanted to pare all that away and have something sleeker, more stream-lined but really as I said just capture the energy of that period." Ford always attracts a star-studded crowd and this time was no different. The show was attended by celebrities including Julianne Moore, Kim Kardashian West and Liev Schreiber, who confessed that it was his first fashion show. "He came back stage and said, 'I've never been to a fashion (show.)' 'How could you never have been to a fashion show?' That's bizare,'" commented Ford. The collection included neon colors, pantsless models wearing sequined tunics and exaggerated shoulders and embellished arms. "I think women need a little bit of something," said the designer. "The way women dress today is very different. Day clothes in the way that we knew them 20 years ago don't exist. Most women in the day now wear jeans, a t-shirt, a great jacket, yoga pants, a t-shirt, trainers, a great jacket, a great piece. If they're going out to lunch or dinner they pop on a pair of high heels and then for evening my customer in New York, Los Angeles, wherever she lives in the world it's a charity event, it's red carpet. I dress a lot of actors, actresses and then it's a different thing. They make an effort so that's why I paused the show, paused the music, changed the light and then brought those dresses out which were more sober but again they're built for red carpets so you need a litlte something that's gonna pop." Ford is also a filmmaker who has directed the films "A Single Man" and "Nocturnal Animals." He said his approaches with both professions are the same which makes the transition from one job to the other "very easy." New York Fashion Week runs through Sept. 13.
