Located just an hour north of Copenhagen, Helsingør is the perfect day trip from the capital. Sweden is a short ferry ride across the sound and there are multiple sailings each day. Tolls were paid by ships entering the Baltic Sea at the Sound and the money generated allowed a large castle to be built overlooking the water. King Frederik II expanded the castle in the 1570's and renamed it Kronborg Castle. Shakespeare's play Hamlet is based on the castle and it hosts Hamlet Festivals each year. Holger Danske is a large statue that rests in the casemates under the castle. Legend has it that he will sleep until Denmark is in peril- and then he will arise and save the country. During WWII, Jews used this location to escape Nazi persecution as hundreds of Danes worked together to hide and smuggle over 7,200 Jews to Sweden over three nights in the fall of 1943. Helsingør also it home to a wonderful Maritime Museum and Hans, the shiny silver guy that is much more impressive than Copenhagen's Little Mermaid. All in all, a wonderful place to spend day.
