King Mzilikazi Day is an annual commemoration held to honor the legacy of King Mzilikazi, the founder of the Ndebele (Mthwakazi) Kingdom in present-day Zimbabwe. Significance Honoring a National Founder: King Mzilikazi (c. 1790–1868) was a powerful military leader and statesman. He was a lieutenant of the Zulu King Shaka before breaking away and leading his people on a long migration north. He successfully united various ethnic groups into a single, strong nation, the Ndebele, in what is now Matabeleland. Cultural and Historical Celebration: The day serves as a vibrant celebration of Ndebele culture, history, and identity. It is a time for people to reconnect with their roots, showcase traditional attire, and participate in events that highlight their heritage. Promoting Unity: The commemoration emphasizes the importance of unity and nation-building, a core principle of King Mzilikazi's reign, as he was known for his ability to integrate different tribes and create a centralized kingdom. 2025 Commemoration The 2025 King Mzilikazi Commemoration is a significant event as it is being expanded to two days for the first time. The theme for the year is "Sigoqa Isizwe Ngamasiko - We Strengthen the Nation Through Culture." September 5, 2025: This day will be dedicated to youth and education, with a focus on students from primary to university level. The goal is to promote heritage-based education and cultural awareness among the younger generation. September 6, 2025: The main public celebration will take place on this day. It will feature a cultural parade marching from Matshobana suburb to Bulawayo City Hall. The main event will include traditional displays by cultural groups, storytelling, and presentations on King Mzilikazi's legacy. It is also expected to feature traditional food and beer. The primary venue for the events is the King Mzilikazi Memorial Site in Mhlahlandlela, located along Old Gwanda Road. While the main celebration takes place in Zimbabwe, there are also commemorations held by the Ndebele diaspora in other parts of the world, including the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.
