P. G. Hurst shares memories of Emma Nevada, a once-famous American soprano. This singer left behind no recordings with the exception of a disc that features her speaking voice. She was born Emma Wixom and raised in Nevada City, California. From this town she took her stage name. I live near Nevada City in California, so I'm interested in Emma Nevada. Her name is on a few Nevada City edifices. She enjoyed fame as an adult and settled in England. She died in 1940 and is buried in Merseyside, England. P. G. Hurst talks to John Freestone. Both men loved good singing and old 78 rpm recordings. P. Geoffrey Hurst--that is, P. G. Hurst--wrote books, including The Operatic Age of Jean de Reszke: Forty Years of Opera 1874 - 1914. HERE HE MENTIONS EMMA NEVADA FOR THE FIRST OF SEVERAL TIMES IN HIS BOOK: Of my late stage friends, Emma Nevada, one of Mapleson's stars in England and America, was naturally a mine of information and reminiscence, and my joyous collaboration with Zelie de Lussan in the writing of her memoirs (alas, never published) was inevitably as instructive as it was entertaining. Blanche Marchesi was a supreme authority on the technical side of singing as well as on correct musical conventions and practices; and a fleeting acquaintance with Emma Eames carried the writer right into the heart of the wonderful 'nineties. Susan Strong and Ben Davies put their undimmed memories always at my disposal, as did Agnes Nicholls (Lady Hamilton Haity), who is very much alive and interested. All these added greatly to my mental picture, to which Guy d'Harddot, the composer of so many beautiful ballads, also contributed. Emma Nevada = P. G.
