Como is a beautiful city in northern Italy, in the Lombardy region, right on the southern tip of Lake Como. It’s about 40 km (25 miles) north of Milan and sits close to the Swiss border. Lake Como: The city is the main gateway to the lake, one of Italy’s most famous destinations. The lake is shaped like an inverted “Y” and surrounded by mountains, villas, and charming towns. Historic Center: Como’s old town has cobblestone streets, medieval towers, and a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture. The Como Cathedral (Duomo di Como) is a standout, built between the 14th and 18th centuries. Silk Industry: Como has long been a hub of silk production. Its silk fabrics are world-renowned, and you can learn more at the Silk Museum (Museo della Seta). Funicular to Brunate: There’s a funicular railway that takes you up to the hilltop village of Brunate, offering stunning panoramic views of the lake and Alps. Villa Olmo & Villas Around the Lake: Elegant 18th–19th century villas dot the lakefront, often surrounded by gardens. Many were built by wealthy families as summer retreats. Lifestyle: Como blends Italian culture with a touch of Swiss influence. It’s known for relaxed lakeside living, great food (especially freshwater fish, polenta, and Lombard specialties), and chic boutiques. Como is home to the University of Insubria (Università degli Studi dell’Insubria), which was established in 1998. It has campuses in Como and Varese. The Como campus is known especially for programs in economics, law, computer science, and natural sciences. Because of its location, the university has a strong international outlook and collaborates with Swiss institutions nearby. In addition to the university, Como also has research centers and specialized schools, particularly in science, technology, and textile design, linking back to its history as a silk production hub. MUSIC Morning Light by Serge Pavkin THE CHANNEL I normally have drone footage in my videos but unfortunately there was a Flight Restriction Zone around this part of Lake Como, so was unable to capture the wonderful sights of the lake and City.
