Some were murdered; others tortured. The 2001 Thames torso murder (“Adam”) victim is believed to have been trafficked from West Africa for a muti ritual. His torso parts were expertly removed; investigators suspect ritualistic murder. Since 2015, there have been 14,000 social-work investigations in England linked to witchcraft accusations; over 2,100 just in March 2024. Many involved children harmed due to suspicions of spiritual demonic possession. The UK’s Amber Project and Project Violet train educators and social workers to respond to abuse linked to beliefs in spirit possession and witchcraft, acknowledging that faith-based ritual abuse is still underrecognized and dangerously growing in some communities.
