The strategy of controlling a COVID-19 like pandemic by centrally shutting down the economy owes its origin to the Chinese response post-Wuhan. The wonder the world needs to contemplate is that the Chinese method of containing the pandemic quickly became the global template for most countries. Since COVID-19 and other pandemics are here to stay, it is time we asked whether this is indeed the template to be emulated by the world. Ultimately, the battle over who will lead the New World Order is not a battle between the US and China — it is far less a battle between Trump and Xi. It is a fight between two different kinds of systems and societies — a closed authoritarian one, or an open participative one — what shall prevail? The Chinese template originated in an authoritarian top-down style of governance — not suited to the very different kinds of societies across the world. The current US-China spat is driven more by the election cycle in the US and the challenge to Trump thrown by what is seen as his inept handling of COVID-19. There is a whole world out there that has nothing to gain by following either China or the US in their rivalry. 3 billion people across Asia, Africa, and the Americas have to face COVID-19 living in very different societies with very different capacities — their solutions cannot be either China-driven or US-driven. As a world singed by COVID-19 turns to refocus on a new order that can be sustainable, equitable, and inclusive — societies will have to choose whether the state can be allowed to assume the same control over the lives of citizens as in China.
