Part of VeEX's V90 product family, the PX90 PON Service Installation Meter is a Selective OPM for G-PON and XGS-PON, enhanced with LAN and WLAN (Wi-Fi) Internet access speed testing capabilities, for service validation. It offers the tools to verify the right optical power levels, before activating the service to residential and small business subscribers. Selective Optical Power Meters (OPM) are required for networks or links carrying multiple signals (wavelengths), such as coexistent passive optical networks (PON), in which multiple PON types share the same optical distribution network (ODN). For example, G-PON (1490 nm), XGS-PON (1577 nm), and sometimes legacy TV/video (1550 nm) often share the same fiber. A regular Broadband OPM will not be able to make accurate measurement in such environment, since it measures the total power received. Selective OPMs have filters to separate the different PON signals, measure them independently and block any other signals. This How-To video shows a step-by-step example of how to use the PX90 PON Installation Meter's selective optical power meter to verify signal levels, at different points of the optical distribution network. Other PON technologies were starting to gain some ground, such as 25G-PON and 50G-PON, however, their higher equipment cost was limiting their mass deployment at that time.
