Panel Description: In 2021 Politico reported that Asian Americans are the least likely to hold elected office, holding less than 1 percent of all elected offices. However, for the 2022 midterm election, a record number of AA & NH/PI candidates appeared on the ballot, and that trend is expected to continue in the 2024 general election. With the appointment of Norman Y. Mineta as the first Asian American Cabinet member in 2000, AA & NH/PIs have increasingly served as appointees in record numbers, with over 15% in the Biden Administration. This opening plenary will discuss AA & NH/PI contributions to public service, and the legacy that our leaders have left for our community. Speakers: Madalene Mielke, APAICS President & CEO Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-28) Fmr. Delegate from Guam Robert Underwood Lt. Governor Sylvia Luke, Hawaii Mayor Pro Tempore Bev Uipi, City of Millcreek, Utah Mayor Aftab Pureval, City of Cincinnati, Ohio Daphne Kwok, Former APAICS Executive Director, Former WHIAANHPI Chair Susan Jin Davis, Al Roker Entertainment, APAICS Board Chair About LLS: The 2024 APAICS Legislative Leadership Summit brings together nonprofit and corporate leaders, subject matter experts, as well as local, state, and federal elected officials to discuss important issues that affect the Asian American & Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander community and the nation at large.
