Syrian civil war grew out of a popular uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011,part of Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East President Assad belongs to the Alawite minority, an off-shoot of Shiite Islam. Most of the army generals are Alawites. The vast majority of armed rebels, on the other hand, come from the Sunni Muslim majority. Bashar al-Assad has ruled Syria as president since July 2000. His father, Hafez al-Assad, ruled Syria from 1970-2000. The ongoing violence against civilians has been condemned by the Arab League, the European Union, the United States and other countries.
