What’s at the core of educational success? Intelligence? Grit? Study skills? All these and more play a role, but if students believe themselves incapable of academic success, even lots of interventions of different kinds won’t make a difference. Believing you’re not college material will make you drop out. Beliefs can be changed — other TED talkers have spoken of this, but how do you pull it all together? Students journeying through UCO’s STLR process discover how. Jeff King, Ed.D., is Executive Director of UCO’s Center for Excellence in Transformative Teaching and Learning. His research and application interests have long focused on what faculty can do to help students learn, to be motivated toward deep learning strategies, and to persist in their education. A decades-long study of educational beliefs held by faculty and students and how to change the limiting beliefs has found its way into his work at UCO. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
