When our parents left home, they dreamed of safety, education, and opportunity. But for many of us who grew up African in Britain, that dream came with an invisible cost. In this episode of Family Meeting, I’m joined by writer, mother, and cultural commentator Uju Asika to talk about growing up African in a white world - from migration and early exposure to racism, to navigating identity, belonging, and silence. Uju shares what it was like leaving Enugu as a child, being sent to British boarding school at just seven years old, hearing the N-word for the first time, and learning very early what it meant to be Black. We explore how racism shapes self-worth, how children learn to perform “Britishness” to belong, and what it means to carry two identities, often without fully fitting into either. This is a conversation about migration, memory, and the parts of childhood we were too young to understand but are still learning to unpack. 🎙️ Family Meeting - where wahala meets wisdom. #GrowingUpAfrican #AfricanDiaspora #BlackBritish #IdentityAndBelonging #MigrationStories #RacismInBritain #IntergenerationalTrauma #BlackChildhood #CulturalIdentity #FamilyMeetingPodcast
