Three Dance Scenes I. Mischievous Barricades II. Drifting Shadows III. Forlane Refractions Written in 2020 for Cello and Guitar Composer: Alan Thomas Premiere performed twice on July 8th & 9th, 2021 at the Landenberghaus Hall in Greifensee, Switzerland EN CUERDAS Cornelia Leuthold, cello David Talamante, guitar with César Sangrador, contemporary dance www.encuerdas.com PROGRAM NOTES: Alan Thomas composes this work during the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020. He writes about his three movement composition: "Francois Couperin is one of my favourite composers. His harpsichord ordres and chamber music seem to contain the full range of human emotion, but always conveyed with a degree of detail and lightness of touch to which I aspire. My Three Dance Scenes take their inspiration from Couperin, drawing on three of his pieces for material and textures to be transformed in a variety of ways. The title arose from the constant sense I had in writing the pieces that they would be ideally suited to being choreographed in a modern dance style". The choreographer and dancer César Sangrador sees the expression in the crossover between three different influences. On the one hand is the product of César's artistic residence in Bern in 2018 under the name “El silencio en una habitación ajena” (silence in someone else's room). On the other hand is inspired on the film "Profundo Carmesí" (1996) by Mexican Filmmaker Arturo Ripstein, and thirdly is the amalgamation of Alan Thomas' music and César's creativity that gives the viewer room for free interpretation.
