AND NOW TO STICK MY NECK OUT; By Sam Ash If you’re reading this because you think it’ll add to your viewing experience, think again. There's nothing you're gonna read here that can even mildly enhance the 90 minutes (& 26 seconds) of musical magic in this video. What makes me so sure? Well for starters, I’m the guy writing this, so if anyone knows it WOULD be me Next, I’m also the guy who came up with Neck2Neck-- while listening to the Mark Knopfler/Chet Atkins Neck&Neck album. Their N&N got me wondering which Jewish guitarists could be N2N’d into a similar concept. In case you’re wondering why I wonder about stuff like that, it’s because from 1988 to 2006, it was my job as Minister of Entertainment at the Homowack—one of the last of the classic Catskill resorts. Anyway all my wondering resulted in a list just 2 names long; Avraham & Yosi. So I pitched it to them, got their ok and then pitched it to the Homowack’s owner Gaby Betesh as the ideal tentpole for our Chol Hamoed lineup. Gaby-- a legendary fan of legendary rock guitarists got the concept immediately. In fact unlike most everyone else who saw it as the musical version of Ali Vs Frazier/Creed Vs Drago(for you millennials), Gaby understood we were talking duet not duel. That insight also begat his only reservation “They’re so different musically, are we sure it’ll work?” “Gaby” I responded, “Avraham & Yosi have headlined here so many times, they’re like ‘family”. Now, for the first time ever these two iconic talents will be sharing their “home stage!--it’ll be like Dylan at the Beacon or Miles at the Vanguard but with yarmulkes & YomTov warmth. Referencing Dylan & Davis was the “closer”, so now I had 5 months to promote a performance that couldn't be promoted as it was a first of its kind. Was I worried? Not really. I work in advertising, so for me, dreaming up/producing Catskill hotel shows was actually an extension of dreaming up/producing ads and commercials except hotel shows had better food than craft services. So not only wasn’t I worried, I was pretty sure we’d be redefining that cliche’/blase’/passe genre known as “hotel shows”. Why? Because up until then, there were only two kinds of “hotel shows” 1)Top name/top dollar acts that cost more to produce than some hotels cost to build. 2)Everything else. To us, N2N represented a 3rd category, the “lightning in a bottle” show that’s only possible when both act & audience feel “at home”(e.g. a hotel). Compare Sinatra Live at The Sands to Live At The Meadowlands and you’ll understand. Fact is, the creativity and magic we experienced that night had more nuance and dimension than any A Lister show. Surprised? Don’t be. A-Listers are about ‘sticking to the script’ and making the expected exhilarating. Sure they may toy with tempos and arrangements, but why mess with success by taking a real risk with a “what if?” Nachum Segal aside, most of Jewish music’s cognoscenti saw N2N as a risky “What If?” When word got out, the “well intentioned” calls started coming in. I was deluged with offers of “mainstream” alternatives that(unlike N2N) “wouldn’t ruin the hotel’s image forever”(actual quote BTW). While we dismissed both calls and “concerns’, I DID have one worry; that Yosi & Avraham would open with something that would bring down the house and in the process, empty it of everyone 55 and older. Despite that, I stuck to my original directive which was “You two are the LAST people that need me telling you what to do, just make sure to have fun”. As you’ll see from the video, the audience liked their fun so much they would’ve stayed ‘til shachris As anything else I say will need a “spoiler alert” preface, I’m going to end by saying thanks to Yosi (A’H) & Avraham(‘Til 120) for proving that great talent is like great wine--both get better with age—and are amazingly enjoyable as long as you know to let them breathe. Yosi, I know you’re up there tehillim & guitar in hand, tweaking the set list for Moshiach’s arrival, so let me just say that for me, the only downside to this amazing trip down memory lane was that it reminded me how much we miss having Yosi Piamenta in our lives Avraham, to you I’ll just say thanks...again. Your performance is as fresh today as it was then. BTW if you can rejuvenate me the way you rejuvenated the audio, please advise and soon.Until then, thanks for the reminder that talent of the kind you’re blessed with never gets old. For those of you still reading, put your phones(& plans)on DO NOT DISTURB and prepare for 90 min & 26 seconds of musical happyhood. Lightning may not strike twice, but as long as that first strike is on the calibre of Neck2Neck, once is just fine (especially when you’re hearing it with newly remastered audio) PERSONNEL Ruby Harris:Harmonica/Violin/Mandolin/Anything with Strings Except Tzitzis Dovid Nulman: Keyboards & Decorum Rob “Yitz” Rosenberg: Bass Drums: Joel Lntc (Last name to come)
