Sister of Spain attack suspect addresses peace rally in Ripoll

(26 Aug 2017) A demonstration to promote peaceful unity was held in the streets of Spain's northeastern town of Ripoll on Saturday. Members of the local Muslim community and other residents gathered in a central square to condemn the extremist attacks that killed 15 people in Barcelona on Aug. 17. Hafida Oukabir, sister of suspected terrorist Moussa Oukabir addressed the crowd, expressing her dismay at the deadly attack. "We share the same grief. And the understanding for what happened is also the same. We must all work together to stop this from ever happening again," she said. Located at the foothills of the Pyrenees, the town is where most suspects came under the influence of a radical imam, investigators say. The demonstration took place at the same time that hundreds of thousands of peace marchers flooded the heart of Barcelona also shouting "I'm not afraid" – a public rejection of violence following the attacks at Las Ramblas, in the heart of the regional capital of Catalonia, and at the seaside village of Cambrils.
