(11 ALIVE) A small plane crashed Sunday morning in the backyard of a home in Doraville, with no injuries on the ground and the pilot and copilot walking away from the wreck with minor injuries. Doraville Police Department Assistant Chief Brian Harris said, "It's a Christmas miracle." The crash happened at Homeland Drive off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. DeKalb County Fire Rescue issued a press release saying their crews responded about 9:30 a.m. to the scene. DeKalb Fire Rescue's release said the plane was a small twin-engine, seven-seat aircraft. They said the plane was headed to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport from Miami when "it experienced a mechanical issue that may have resulted in the crash." Assistant Chief Harris described the scene to 11Alive, saying some trees had come down in the crash and the plane itself was in bad shape — but the two people on the plane were largely okay. He described their injuries as minor and not life-threatening. "A debris field extended into nearby trees and adjoining yards," DeKalb Fire's release stated. Doraville PD was continuing to be on the scene around 11:30 a.m. and investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board were expected to arrive on scene at some point. The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the incident, as well.
