Panelo denies talking to Kaufman over Duterte’s case | ANC

Dateline Philippines: Former Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Atty. Salvador Panelo on Monday, February 23, denied having a conversation with former President Rodrigo Duterte’s lead defense counsel, Nicholas Kaufman, contrary to what Kaufman said earlier in the day. In an interview with Karmina Constantino, Panelo said, “We have not yet crafted any defense so far, as the case is being handled by another team.” When asked whether he had been in touch with Atty. Kaufman, Panelo replied, “No.” Earlier, Kaufman had said, “Attorney Martin Delgra and Attorney Salvador Medialdea have been working with us all along. We've been taking advice from Attorney Delgra, who has been the former president's lawyer for many years. Same for Salvador, Medialdea, Bingbong, who has been a long-time friend of the former president.” Kaufman also emphasized that the support of Filipino lawyers is “very significant and very important,” as they aim to help explain the proceedings to the Filipino public “through an unfiltered and unbiased stance.” He said he feels “very privileged” to have their support. “Especially Attorney Salvador Panelo, who's quite an icon, someone I quite admire and have followed over the years,” he added. Panelo clarified that there is no formal delineation between the Philippine legal team and The Hague team. “None whatsoever. We haven’t met formally,” he said.
