Rambam has launched the new ‘Center for Medical Innovation’ (Innovation Laboratory), the only one of its kind in Israel. The innnovation center offers hospital staff a cooperative evironment where they can identify the unmet needs of patients, and translate them into practical inventions – to the prototype level – that solve these problems. This can be, for example, a senior surgeon who is faced with an unresolved challenge in the operating room or a clinic that needs a special device for specific patients. The center helps all creative staff who have applicable ideas, turn their schemes into reality. To bring these various ideas to fruition, the center accompanies inventors, and offers them the aid of expert engineers. It also supplies the most basic tools, like hammers, saws and welding machines, as well as innovations used in the world’s most advanced digital production. The center allows the use of 3D scannners, and printers like Ultimaker, sensors from the world of IOT and programming packages with different abilities. The first successful example of such collaboration between the new Center for Medical Innovation and a Rambam surgeon is exemplified by the work of Prof. Aaron Hoffman, director of the Vascular Surgery Unit. Prof. Hoffman uses tools offered by the center, particularly 3D printers, to get three-dimensional images of blood vessels before he performs operations. This allows him to decide which procedure is best-suited to treatment. The merging of anicent and modern knowledge creates new opportunities, especially in the field of medicine. Likewise, the new abilities of doctors in recent years, like the use of 3D printers, daily enhance the world of treatment. Activities with different technologies and their individual accompaniment include the assistance of an interdisciplinary team of experts (specialists in patents, engineering and product design), development services, locating partners from different insitutions, and more. Center activities are operated and conducted by ‘Rambam Med-Tech’, a commercial firm of Rambam Medical Center, which was founded, in part, to utilize the abilities of hospital staff to find solutions to medical problems.
