Anke Beck discusses open peer review at De Gruyter. Lara Speicher describes the reasons for peer-reviewing work and the many benefits for authors and publishers. Aina Svensson covers a new initiative in Sweden called Kriterion, a label of quality for academic books and monographs. About the speakers: Anke Beck is one of two managing directors at De Gruyter and is responsible for Editorial, Publication Management & Development, Academic & Institutional Relations and Open Access. She began her career as Editor in Chief of Mouton de Gruyter in 1994 after receiving her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Bielefeld and having previously also earned an MA degree at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London and spent research time at the University of Windhoek in Namibia and Boulder Colorado. Her career advanced through Editorial and she became Publishing Director for Mouton and Humanities/Social Sciences in 2001. In 2006, she was appointed Vice President of Publishing and was named Managing Director in 2013. Lara Speicher is Publishing Manager at UCL Press. UCL Press is the first fully open-access university press in the UK, and it launched its first books in June 2015. UCL Press publishes scholarly monographs, textbooks and journals in a wide range of subject areas, with particular strengths in anthropology, archaeology, media studies, built environment, architecture and history. Lara comes from a publishing background and previously held editorial roles at British Library Publishing and the BBC. Aina Svensson has been working in the areas of open access and open repositories for many years. From 2011 - 2013 she worked in the National Library’s program OpenAccess.se and participated in the European OpenAIRE network. Over the years, she has been involved in several national projects to develop and increase open-access publishing. One of the projects was to investigate improvements for the academic book publishing process in Sweden which led to the establishment of Kriterium – a new quality mark for Swedish academic open-access books. Kriterium is a collaborative venture between the universities of Gothenburg, Lund and Uppsala. Since 2015 she is Head of the Electronic Publishing Centre at Uppsala University Library, where the publishing system DiVA is developed in collaboration with 45 associated members. The unit also handles the entire publication process for books and doctoral theses at Uppsala University. Aina Svensson is a librarian and also holds a master's degree in biology.
