Congress just advanced a massive internet bill called the KIDS Act, that would destroy the internet as we know it. Congress is aggressively pushing a massive package of internet "safety" bills, including the Kids Act, the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), the Screen Act, and COPPA 2.0. While lawmakers claim these bills are designed to protect children, the reality is that they are incredibly dangerous pieces of legislation that threaten to age-gate, censor, and heavily surveil the internet. In a recent hearing, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez correctly pointed out that "child safety" is being used as a smokescreen for a national surveillance program that big tech lobbyists want. However, she also fed into a dangerous moral panic by falsely comparing social media use to big tobacco and the opioid crisis. The truth is, there is no scientific evidence proving that social media is an illicit, addictive substance causing widespread harm or cognitive decline. This is all about amassing corporate power and pushing identity verification. Any form of age verification is inherently identity verification, meaning platforms like Discord and Meta will have to scan the faces and IDs of adults and teenagers alike. Instead of censoring online speech and creating privacy nightmares, we need real data privacy reform. In this video I break down: • What the Kids Act actually does • Why privacy advocates are sounding the alarm • The debate over age verification and online safety • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s comments on the bill • How it will reshape the internet #tech #technology #techpolicy #section230 #KIDSAct #KOSA #digitalID #ageverification #censorship #surveillance #AI
