More than 3 million people have suffered from gout at some point in their lives. While it can be incredibly painful and common, health experts say it can also be prevented. Dr. Victoria Yorke, a primary care physician on staff at Lee Memorial Health System, says each patient living with gout has a different trigger. “Gout is something that is absolutely affected by what we eat.” When a patient has an attack most often it’s caused by what they ate. But Dr. Yorke says there can be other factors. “In some patients gout can be from genetic reasons. In other patients gout can be from a medication, so you always have to look at the whole picture of it.” The most common symptoms of gout include severe pain, redness, and swelling in the joints. Attacks can come on suddenly and usually at night. While many patients have pain in their big toe, health experts say gout can actually target any part of the body. “Gout is a type of arthritis where you have an increase of something in the blood stream called uric acid. What happens is it can precipitate into the joints and cause terrible pain. You can get kidney stones from it, you can even get gallstones,” said Dr. Yorke. If a patient doesn’t know the trigger, Dr. Yorke suggests trying a temporary organic diet that’s high in fruits, vegetables, and omega threes. “Increasing foods high in omega three fatty acids will definitely help with the joints.” Patients also need to avoid foods that can raise the uric acid level like liver, sardines, salmon, and mussels. “They actually are amazed at how good they feel,” said Dr. Yorke. Once you’ve identified the triggers it’s important to avoid them. Serious and repeated cases of gout can lead to joint and even kidney damage.
