Sweetwater Valley Farms was part of a Revolutionary Land Grant to General Willam Ballard Lenoir. The farm is located in the town of Philadelphia TN, approximately 8 miles from Sweetwater, TN. The first dairy barn was constructed on the property in 1917, with various different owners tending the land until 1987 when John & Celia Harrison bought an interest in the farm and became the sole owners in 1992. The cheese production began in 1998. There are now over 1,500 cattle on the farm with a variety of crops grown as well. In 2012, the farm was named an Innovative Dairy at the International Dairy Food Association Forum. There are several operational activities at the farm including an wastewater treatment system which allows sand from dairy wastewater system to be recycled and organic matter captured for land application – i.e. fertilize. The farm also utilizes Lely XL Robotics for milking. Sweetwater Dairy was the first farm in TN to utilize the system and the 4th nationally. Quite the distinction! The farm hosts tours throughout the year – and advance reservations are strongly recommended. Groups of 30 can be accommodated, but this requires advance reservations and coordination. The facilities include a 5,000 square foot event and education / exhibition area – appropriately dubbed ‘The Udder Story.’ The cheese produced at the farm is sold onsite as well as at a number of retail locations, largely in TN but can be found as far away as Valdosta and Savannah GA, Birmingham AL, Minnesota, Maryland and Canada – near Ottawa. A listing of the locations where the cheese is sold includes numerous wineries in the region – Va, TN, NC and Ga. If you frequent wineries, there is a good chance you have enjoyed the Sweetwater cheese at a winery. There is a gift shop and café onsite. Cheese can be purchased – as a simple block of cheese, part of a gift basket, or combination of flavors/ types. The gift shop also offers a selection of cheese accessories, honey and jams and jellies. The Seed to Sandwich Café focuses on cheese sandwiches – what else! The menu includes about a half dozen cheese sandwiches, ranging from what may be considered a typical cheese sandwich to more elaborate choices with multiple varieties of cheese, green tomatoes and ham from nearby Benton Farms. There is a kids menu along with hot dogs, BLT and PB & J. A selection of coffees is available – including one with vanilla ice cream. The café also offers a half dozen flavors of milkshakes.
