Yizhou yugu 宜州渔鼓 narrative singing from Guangxi 广西, southern China

A mini-documentary about Yizhou yugu (宜州渔鼓), a genre of traditional narrative singing (sometimes incorporating elements of dance) from Yizhou District (宜州区), Hechi (河池市), northwestern Guangxi (广西), southern China. The senior performer/expert featured in the video is Mr. Wei Shanguang (韦善光). Yizhou yugu derives from the tradition of Daoqing (道情) and uses the yugu (渔鼓, "fisherman's drum"), a single-headed hand drum with body made from a bamboo tube, as the primary accompanying instrument. Additionally, porcelain teacups tapped together and porcelain saucers struck with chopsticks are used to provide rhythmic accompaniment. This video was probably filmed in Yizhou District (宜州区), Hechi (河池市), northwestern Guangxi, southern China, c. July 1, 2020. Daoqing (道情) is an old and widespread Chinese tradition, in existence since the Southern Song Dynasty, in which male Daoist performers (who were often blind) sing ballads with moral themes (which can be considered folk sermons), while accompanying themselves with a yugu (渔鼓, "fisherman's drum") and a long clapper called jianban (简板, "bamboo slip clapper"). Since the Qing Dynasty, Daoqing has nourished numerous genres of narrative singing and opera.
