Suzan Shown Harjo is a trailblazing Native American activist, poet, and cultural leader whose life’s work has transformed Indigenous rights and advocacy in the United States. A proud member of the Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee Nations, she has dedicated her career to protecting sacred sites, preserving Native traditions, and challenging harmful stereotypes. In this video, we explore her pivotal contributions to landmark legislation, including the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the American Indian Religious Freedom Act, and the creation of the National Museum of the American Indian. Harjo also led the movement to eliminate offensive sports mascots, resulting in the Washington NFL team changing its name to the Washington Commanders. Her tireless activism earned her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014 and countless other accolades, cementing her legacy as a champion of Native heritage and justice. Join us in celebrating her extraordinary journey during National Native American Heritage Month.
