The City of Lloydminster’s environmental services department works every day to safely maintain and operate our municipal landfill. Our goal is to provide valuable service to our residents and neighbouring communities while keeping our city clean and protecting the environment. Each year, the city diverts more than 3000 tonnes of organics and recyclables from the landfill and sends them to appropriate facilities. The less waste that goes into the landfill, the longer we can extend the landfill’s lifespan. This strategy saves the ratepayers and the city millions —not to mention the environmental benefits! Lloydminster residents must work together to divert recyclable material out of the garbage during the curbside collection process. Organics, recyclables, and garbage are collected separately and are taken to different facilities for either reuse, recycling, or disposal. Ready for a tour? When customers first arrive at the landfill, city staff members spot check incoming loads to direct residents to the proper disposal area and ensure only acceptable items are disposed of at the landfill. As customers proceed through the facility, they’ll come across a small household recycling station before proceeding to the household hazardous waste area. Here, customers can safely dispose of common household hazardous waste free of charge. The Lloydminster Landfill accepts items such as batteries, paint, tires, used engine oil and filters, solvents and cleaners, and propane tanks. All of these items are taken by staff to specialized facilities for proper and safe disposal by trained professionals. Remember—hazardous materials such as these do not belong in your curbside collection bins. Next, customers make their way through the commercial wood drop-off and scrap metal sections before reaching the working face of the landfill—what most people visualize when thinking about the landfill. Our sanitary landfill staff are eager to help you make your visit as smooth and pleasant as possible.
