The implementation of reforms by the Palestinian Authority has become a central condition of a UN Security Council resolution on Gaza. While the resolution suggests reforms as a prerequisite for statehood and self-determination, the specific demands remain undefined and vary depending on the actors involved. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects Palestinian statehood but insists on recognition of Israel as a Jewish state and measures to combat Palestinian factions. Meanwhile, key donors, including the European Union, have outlined reform priorities, such as textbook revisions, anti-corruption measures, and elections. However, Palestinians themselves feel excluded from this narrative, with many expressing dissatisfaction with their leadership and scepticism about the likelihood of elections. For Palestinians, the primary concern remains national liberation, sparking questions about whether these reforms align with that goal or merely reinforce a status quo shaped by external powers. Balancing the pressures of international conditions with urgent humanitarian needs will be a significant challenge for the Palestinian Authority in the months ahead.
