Can Michael Verney survive the training a horse goes through on a daily basis in preparation for the Cheltenham Festival? The first thing that quickly passes through your mind as the body starts to ache is ‘how in Jaysus do horses do this on a daily basis and make it look so easy?’ An extra pair of legs probably helps! ‘The Man Versus Horse Challenge’ is barely 100 metres old when regrets start to kick in. Has this task been underestimated? Have I bitten off more than I can chew? Is there enough training under the belt? Dodgy ankles and knees meant there was no running done in preparation and the body was attacked without forcing major impact through it. Would that be enough to negotiate Owning Hill? This isn’t any normal gallop; this is one of the most celebrated training establishments on this island. Ann-Marie O’Brien (née Crowley – 1992-’93) and her husband Aidan (1993-’94, 94-’95, 95-’96) were each crowned Irish champion jumps trainer while based in the south Kilkenny yard, which is over 750ft above sea level. Their son Joseph O’Brien has carried on that tradition in the last decade, with Irish Derby, Melbourne Cup, Breeders’ Cup and Cheltenham Festival winners being shaped close to Piltown.
