Poster showing US President George W Bush and former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein STORYLINE: US Central Command has confirmed that high-ranking Iraqi official Ali Hassan al-Majid, a cousin of Saddam Hussein, has been captured by US forces. Al-Majid is also known by the nickname "Chemical Ali" for his role in chemical weapons attacks that killed thousands of Kurds in northern Iraq in 1988. In April, military officials said al-Majid was killed in an airstrike on a house in southern Iraq, while US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said he believed "the reign of terror of Chemical Ali has come to an end". But General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters in June that interrogations of Iraqi prisoners indicated that he might be still be alive. Al-Majid was number five on the US list of most-wanted Iraqis, designated as the "Ace of Spades" in their deck of cards. He has been linked to the bloody crackdown on Shi'ites in southern Iraq after their uprising following the 1991 Gulf War. He was governor of Kuwait during Iraq's seven-month occupation in 1990-1991 which led to the first Gulf War. Before the 1968 revolution, al-Majid was a simple warrant officer responsible for delivering messages by motorcycle, but under Saddam he rose to become defence minister from 1991-95, as well as a regional party leader.
