The short striding of the the PSSM afflicted horse is even more obvious in this video. Both Type 1 and Type 2 have similar symptoms. Their maintenance diets are, however, totally different. Although Maggie is doing the test pattern fairly well considering the overly deep, mucky clay arena, she's short, tight, and very upright in her movements. Being her normal self, she rarely complains. Many PSSM positive horses experiencing this severity of muscle tightness would be reactive. Owners and even vets label them as, badly trained, poor saddle fit, bad feet, need chiro care, etc. Of course horses can have any or all of those, and still have or not have, the muscle myopathy of PSSM diagnosed. Don't exclude the disease, and if your horse has previously been fine, don't believe the 'expert advice' telling you its incompetence on your part. You'll find that it's possible your vets will disclaim you, your farrier will accuse you of incompetence. your trainer will force more training on you, or your horse. Eventually you'll grow rhino hide ... ask, explore, read, view, test, seek help, and keep going. This army is growing and we're not going to remain silent. Muscle pain is real. Ask a human living with it what it's like. Then remember the only way your horse can complain is by acting out, or going short or wonky, or biting, kicking, or being a bronc. This video was shot three years before I found a vet that even suggested PSSM. We were still lost in the fog. It's now the end of 2019 and of the six vets in my area, only two acknowledge the diseases even exist. The others are still on list of lets inject again (even thought x-rays show zero bone problems). Horses can have coexisting diseases plus be PSSM positive. A horse with PSSM can still be HYPP positive. It can have more than one type of PSSM and that means extremely fine tuning a diet. Some PSSM horses may never develop symptoms, some will not show serious symptoms until mid life. Other will be severely affected very early in life. PSSM horses are horses first. They still require the same care and consideration they would have before you knew they had a permanent life altering disease. They can still get any other disease horses get. Colic is the most frequently confused disease in PSSM horses. Is a horse having an attack of colic, or is it tying up? PSSM Type 2 is an umbrella disease that is just beginning to be opened. It is not just one disease, as is Type 1. There are several different myopathies lumped together, and NONE of them involve Polysacride Storage (glucose, glycogen, sugar) problems that Type Ones suffer from. http://equiseq.com/blog/polysaccharid...
