This Live Talk was produced by Being Patient with support provided by the Society of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging and Eli Lilly and Company. Dr. Jacob Dubroff, MD, PhD, shares his research using positron emission tomography β commonly known as a PET scan β to study neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinsonβs and Alzheimerβs. He discusses why PET scans are not all created equal, how radiotracers target amyloid and tau proteins, and what imaging can and canβt tell us about cognitive decline. He also explains why MRI remains the first step in the diagnostic process, the promise and limits of blood tests, and how changes in insurance coverage are shaping access to brain imaging in the era of anti-amyloid treatments. Dubroff is an associate professor of radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and an attending radiologist across Penn Medicine hospitals. His clinical practice focuses on utilizing medical imaging technologies, such as PET scans and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), to aid doctors in detecting brain disease pathologies. The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging will hold its 2025 Patient Education Day on June 22, available both in person in New Orleans and livestreamed via YouTube. The event will explore the role of nuclear medicine in diagnosing, managing, and treating disease, with a special focus on Alzheimerβs disease, prostate cancer, and neuroendocrine tumors. Dubroff will be speaking at the Alzheimerβs breakout session during the event. β- If you loved watching this Live Talk, visit our website to find more of our Alzheimerβs coverage and subscribe to our newsletter: https://www.beingpatient.com/ Follow Being Patient: Twitter: Β Β /Β being_patient_Β Β Instagram: Β Β /Β beingpatientvoicesΒ Β Facebook: Β Β /Β beingpatientalzheimersΒ Β LinkedIn: Β Β /Β being-patientΒ Β Being Patient is an editorially independent journalism outlet for news and reporting about brain health, cognitive science, and neurodegenerative diseases.
