Bible Reading(s): Mark 6:1-13 Preacher: Series: Who is this Man? - Gospel of Mark Summary: Have you ever thought you knew something well, only to discover your understanding was upside down? Just like the evolution of dietary advice, our ideas about faith can often be incomplete or even misleading. Many, perhaps like you, grew up hearing about Jesus but may never have truly grasped who He is, leading to confusion or even rejection of the faith they thought they knew. In Mark 6, Jesus returns to His hometown of Nazareth, where people thought they knew Him. Despite His undeniable power and profound wisdom, their familiarity with 'just the carpenter' blinded them. They were deeply offended and refused to believe – a powerful, destructive unbelief that even amazed Jesus. This wasn't mere doubt but a hardened heart unwilling to see the truth right before their eyes. Yet, immediately after this, Jesus sends His disciples out on a 'ministry of belief' (Mark 6:7-13). He strips them of worldly provisions, commanding them to rely entirely on God and to be deeply rooted in community. Even while they were still learning and grappling with their own understanding, Jesus equipped them with His authority to preach repentance and cast out evil spirits. This teaches us that despite our own doubts or imperfect knowledge, God empowers us to share His truth. You will face unbelief, but like the disciples, you are called to shake it off and continue proclaiming the good news. This sermon extends a profound invitation to repentance – not a harsh condemnation, but a loving call to 'turn around.' It’s a radical 180-degree shift from relying on yourself to placing your full trust in Jesus. If you've been hurt by the church or confused by conflicting ideas about God, this is your chance for a fresh look at the real Jesus. For those already following Him, it’s a daily reminder to confess your struggles, reorient your focus, and continually turn your eyes back to Him. His name is Jesus, and He invites you to turn and believe, relying completely on Him.
