She became widely recognized for her performance in the 1994 Tamil film Mahanadhi, where she sang the poignant song "Sri Ranga Ranga Nathaa", composed by Ilaiyaraaja. This song showcased her classical training and emotional depth, earning her lasting recognition. Shobana began her training in Carnatic music at a very young age. She schooled in the Carnatic system of music by stalwarts in the field like Sri Swamimalai Janakiraman and Prof. T.R. Subramaniam from the age of five, which helped her build a strong foundation in the art form. Shobana is a celebrated performer in the Carnatic music scene, known for her traditional renditions and adherence to classical standards. She has performed at major music festivals and sabhas in India and abroad. Her musical talents and academic expertise are unique. In addition to her acclaim and success as a performing artist, Shobana has very high academic credentials in the music field. She has given many lecture demonstrations, published book chapters and has presented papers on Carnatic music. Shobana is also a Carnatic Music Guru for several students in India and the US.
