A playthrough of Renovation's 1991 action-RPG for the Sega Genesis, Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. Wanderers from Ys, originally released in 1989 for the NEC PC88, was the third game in Falcom's flagship series of action-oriented RPG adventures. Nihon Telenet's Sega Genesis port was the second localization of Ys III to land in North America, following a month after the November 1991 release of the TurboGrafx-CD version ( • Ys III: Wanderers From Ys (TurboGrafx-CD) ... ) and a month ahead of the SNES one. There was also a version for the Famicom ( • Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (Famicom) Playth... ), but that one never left Japan. Of the three console ports that were released in English, the Genesis game is the most accurate representation of the original. The level layouts, controls, game mechanics, and interface are virtually identical, and they even included the superfluous interlaced mode that was intended to improve the readability of Japanese fonts on computer monitors. It introduces a few nice improvements, as well. There are new intro and ending cutscenes, the screen scrolling has been smoothed out, the graphics are more colorful, and the soundtrack makes the Genesis's FM soundchip shine. Granted, it won't set your hair on fire the way the incredible TurboGrafx CD version will, but it's great nonetheless. If you're playing a cartridge version of Ys III, the Genesis game is the way to go. It's an excellent adaptation of a very good game, and it was well worth its $65 asking price in 1991. _______ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
