Walking Tour of Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland

Corsier-sur-Vevey is a lovely Swiss village located a short walk from the north shore of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva), between Lausanne and Montreux. It's a very old village, dating back to at least 1079! As its name indicates, the village is located in the hills above its more famous neighbour, Vevey. Tributes to its most famous resident, Charlie Chaplin, can be found throughout town. Chaplin called Corsier-sur-Vevey home from 1953 until his death in 1977. This walking tour will explore Charlie Chaplin Park, with beautiful alp views, and Chaplin's final resting place! Corsier-sur-Vevey isn't just about Charlie Chapin and the surrounding vineyards though. It's also home to the headquarters of the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles, the international governing body for amateur wrestling at United World Wrestling (UWW). This walking tour starts at the Paroisse de Corsier-Corseaux Protestant Church, which dates from the 10th century. We'll proceed down Rue du Château, past some government offices, to Charlie Chaplin Pack (Parc Charlie Chaplin). A stroll through the park is inspiring any day with beautiful alp views in the distance, play areas for kids, and an off-leash dog area. For the more competitive amongst us, there's a great spot for table tennis and lawn bowling. Exiting the park and continuing along Rue du Château will bring us to the United World Wrestling (UWW) offices, with their great crested gate and fun wrestling-themed murals. Across the street, we'll cut through town along Rue du Collège, passing Collège de Corsier in the process. At the end of the street we'll turn left along Rue Centrale and make our way back toward the church. Along the way there's a lot of great, historic architecture, water fountains for a quick drink (or to refill your bottle), and even the neighbourhood household goods swap table. Turning right at the church, along Rte de Corseaux, we'll find Hotel de La Place right in front of us. The hotel dates from 1592, and features recently renovated rooms and a traditional Swiss-French restaurant. Just past the hotel, we'll turn left along Chem. de Meruz. Passing many grand, traditional Swiss homes, we'll find ourselves at the Corsier-sur-Vevey Cemetery (Cimetière). The cemetery entrance is along Sur le Crêt, just to the left of the corner. To find the final resting place of Charlie Chaplin and his wife, Oona, take the main path from the cemetery entrance. Just before you get to the far end, turn right through the trees. You'll find the gravesite in an open area just in front of the wall. A final note about the Chaplin gravesite. In March 1978, just 3 months after his burial, Chaplin's coffin and body was exhumed and stolen in the middle of the night. It was being held for ransom, but was eventually recovered 10 weeks later in a field 15 miles away (no ransom was paid and the perpetrators were arrested). To deter future grave-robbing attempts, the coffin was re-interred and encased in cement. There's also rumours that if you get to close, alarms will sound - we didn't test that theory!
