Nonmotor features of PD are often overlooked & can significantly impact quality of life. This discussion will include treatment options. Although Parkinson’s disease (PD) is most widely recognized for its motor features, it also is characterized by an array of features that have little to do with movement. These have been christened the nonmotor features of PD, and include sleep disturbances, cognitive impairment, depression, anxiety, fatigue, apathy, pain, impaired sense of smell, visual disturbances, and autonomic dysfunction. The nonmotor features of PD often are overlooked - and consequently untreated - and can significantly impact quality of life. This lecture will focus on Dysautonomias--autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction in PD-- including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, urinary, sexual, and temperature regulation. Treatment options will also be discussed. Dr. Ron Pfeiffer Dr. Pfeiffer earned his undergraduate and medical degree from the University of Nebraska. He completed neurological training at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and has served on the Neurology faculty at several universities, including his current position at the Oregon Health and Science University. His research focus has been on various aspects of Parkinson’s disease, including gastrointestinal dysfunction. He has participated in over 70 clinical trials, has been a long-standing member of the Parkinson Study Group, and served in a number of leadership positions in the Parkinson’s research world over the past decades. He has also been a prolific writer and editor, having authored of over 330 articles and co-editor of 8 books and prestigious journals.
