(27 Jun 2015) Hundreds of people in the US states of Alabama and South Carolina gathered on Saturday to protest against the removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of Capitol buildings following the recent mass shooting in Charleston. Those rallying for the Confederate flags to be put back on display say it's a matter of Southern heritage, not racial divide. About 50 Confederate flag defenders rallied at the South Carolina Statehouse in Columbia. The crowd waved over two dozen Confederate flags under the Statehouse flagpole, which bears a Confederate flag, and on the Statehouse steps. The rally in support of the flag occurred just hours after a woman scaled the Statehouse flag pole and removed the Confederate flag. Authorities arrested two activists and replaced the flag within half an hour.
