Bringing Animal Puppets to Life – How to Make a Bigger Impact

In my 15 years as a hand puppet seller (I stopped in 2019 and don't sell puppets anymore), I’ve held and sold many of them. What often struck me when customers tried out an animal puppet was that many didn’t fully (or at all) use the puppet’s potential. Instead, the animal often ended up floating in the air rather than coming to life. With just a few small adjustments, you can significantly improve your performance with an animal puppet and evoke completely different reactions from your audience. In this video, I’ll show you how to do just that. The puppets I used in this video are puppets from the Folkmanis and Living Puppets brand. Check them out on Amazon. About me I'm a former primary school teacher who became fascinated by how a simple hand puppet could make a real difference for children. That curiosity led to years of exploration: could a puppet be more than a toy? Could it be a tool for encouraging language, social-emotional skills, and resilience? The answer was clear: yes. A puppet, when used with intention, can offer children something even adults sometimes can't – friendship, emotional safety, and space to express themselves freely. In 2004, I founded Wonderbaarlijke Spiegels, offering a large collection of hand puppets through my webshop (handpop-nl), while blogging, vlogging, and supporting parents and professionals. In 2019, I sold the webshop to fully focus on training and content creation. In total, I’ve written five books about working with puppets and continue to inspire others to use a puppet as a tool for connection and development.
