Somatic Re-Education—Girl with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy Learns How to Move Arms

Maria is challenged with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy (ADCP), one of the most severe forms of CP, Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy is characterized by severe hypertonia and hypotonia—very often, children with ADCP are unable to control their muscle coordinations due to the extreme fluctuations in muscle tone they experience. Nine year-old Maria has taken sessions at the Spiral Movement Center for 6 months. When we first began working with her, we had serious doubts that she might make progress—she showed severe spasticity of the arms, neck, torso and legs that would require intensive bodywork and patience. Amazingly Maria has slowly gained ground. Not only has she learned how to control her arms better but she is also learning how to move her head, roll, crawl and stand. Her progress speaks to the importance of inner awareness in motor learning. The cutting-edge somatic bodymind approach that SMC employs to help children with CP is called Adapted Spiral Praxis. It is a gentle, non-invasive system which is geared primarily in increasing a child's self-awareness of his/her body through bodywork, movement activities and play.
