A ship is designed to carry cargo. This is its primary job. However there can be unequal distribution of cargo at times which can cause severe unwanted stresses developed at various points on the ship. These stresses if not checked and kept under limit can be very much detrimental to the ships structure. Now we can’t move cargo ourselves nor throw it. What we can do is adjust the distribution of further weights in form of water. This water is carried in ballast tanks. Primary source of water at sea is sea water but it has a high level of salt in it which causes corrosion. So we need to inspect these ballast tanks from Time to Time. This is one of the jobs of chief officer.
