The "Box Hill brickworks" was opened in 1890, under the name of The Box Hill Brick Company. When it was still in operation the factory had expansive clay quarries adjacent to and around the factory and even had it’s own little train line to cart bricks to the main Lilydale/Belgrave line to build a booming post Goldrush Melbourne. The factory produced mainly bricks but at times it also produced some other clay based products. The factory survived many different changes of hands, two world wars, the Spanish influenza pandemic and other notable historical events. In August 1988 the heritage listed factory and buildings and surrounding quarries were closed down forever just before it’s 100th birthday. The main quarry was later used as the Box Hill Landfill and the other smaller quarry was converted into a small lake and a park for the community to enjoy. But nothing was done with the factory and out buildings. Over time the buildings slowly fell into disrepair and were trashed by vandals and graffitists. Almost facing it’s 30 year anniversary of being abandoned the Box Hill Brickworks is still a proud historic icon to the locals of Box Hill and of the people of Melbourne. Now just a graffiti covered shell of it’s former powerful industrial self, history still remains in the gaps in the intricate brick work and on the dust settled on the hulking rusting machines that last grinded to a stop in 1988. Info on the brickworks can be found online but this is a great site. http://bpadula.tripod.com/montalbert/... We take only pictures and leave only footprints and break nothing but silence.
