Written in the late 4th century, "Not Three Gods" is a powerful theological treatise by St. Gregory of Nyssa, one of the great Cappadocian Fathers and a key defender of Nicene orthodoxy. The work is addressed to a man named Ablabius, who raised a critical question: If the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all equally divine, how can Christians claim to worship one God and not three? In response, Gregory offers a profound and careful explanation of the Trinity—affirming that while there are three distinct persons (or hypostases), they share one divine essence (ousia), and therefore are not three gods, but one. Drawing on analogies from nature, language, and Scripture, Gregory demonstrates that the unity of the divine nature is not compromised by the real distinctions between the persons. His goal is both pastoral and doctrinal: to preserve the Church’s confession of the oneness of God without collapsing the distinct identities of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. #christian #churchhistory #audiobook #history
