Decarbonising Flood Defences in Essex

The Decarbonisation Technology Accelerator’s Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) theme is undertaking an exciting trial of enhanced compaction control technology at the River Roding project in the Eastern Hub. Located in Essex, the project is creating a new flood alleviation reservoir to protect local properties from flooding. The MMC trial is focused on the creation of a clay embankment and is seeking to demonstrate how ground compaction targets could be met with fewer passes from a roller, thereby reducing fuel use and carbon emissions. Using a roller equipped with ground compaction sensors and GPS, live heat mapping and stiffness sensor data is transmitted to the site office and viewed by the driver via an in-cab display. This allows the roller operator and site staff to see where compaction targets have been achieved in real time.
