(History): About 100 years ago, Otaru's port was always congested with many ships transporting goods from Hokkaido to Honshu. The Otaru Canal was built to alleviate this congestion and was completed in 1923. Small boats called barges traveled the waterway, transporting many goods from ships offshore to warehouses on the coast. Otaru became the leading economic city in northern Japan, and the canal was a bustling logistics hub, but a new wharf was built, and the city became a car-oriented society, and it was filled in and turned into a road. Otaru flourished as a commercial city, and at the end of the Taisho period (around 1926) it was also a "financial town" with 25 banks lined up.
