The construction of the buildings which are used as the Opera House and the National Library today started under the difficult conditions of the First World War. After the liberation of Izmir, the delegation which came to the management of the projects in 1925 signed an agreement with Ipek Film to complete the production of the cinema and ensured that the construction was completed by this company in return for the operation of the cinema for a certain period of time. The cinema building began to serve in 1926 under the name "Elhamra Cinema". The building bears the signature of Architect Tahsin Sermet who is one of the pioneers of Neo-Classical Turkish architecture and consists of two floors above the basement. The large wooden dome covering the entrance built for decorative purposes covered with lead. The other small dome in the middle of the roof, pointed arches, Rumi decorations and tiles reflect Ottoman influences.
