Most of us have all experienced riding a horse whose movement was choppy, tight, bouncy, and impossible to sit. And we experienced the frustration and dismay of feeling like we suck as a rider. Before you keep beating yourself up about your poor riding skills, let me ask you this. Have you ever watched the horse you ride move with another rider, or filmed you riding this horse? Reason I ask is if you have you might have been able to see what was going on with the horse (or rider) that created the choppy movement. And, if you didn’t see any reason, or cause, for the choppy movement most likely your eye wasn’t trained enough to see how the mechanics were working wrong. And this is where the problem begins and it’s not with you! While it’s easy today to find quick answers and tips on becoming a better rider, we aren’t learning the number one area to making us balanced and confident riders. It appears that we are being taught more about the mechanics, the working parts, of riding and not learning the foundation of riding, meaning the underlying basis or principles that make a good rider. Through years of experience, working with thousands of horses and riders, the number one area I see missing is the underlying area of what makes a good rider. And, guess what, making a good rider has nothing to do with teaching the rider, not at first. See, making a good rider isn’t just about learning the body mechanics of how to ride, such as: rider’s position, leg position, seat position, stirrup length, hand position and how it all works together. See, teaching the rider is the easy part and most likely why we aren’t being taught the right way to ride balanced and in harmony with our horse’s movement. The great riding masters knew it and taught it but it’s still missing in most of our riding lessons and horse development. That one “thing” has everything to do with developing a good riding horse. This means we develop the horse’s movement first and before we ride the movement. Yep, that’s right. The horse needs to become a professional athlete and this means he has to go into a level of training that is dedicated to developing balanced and collected movement. This process includes the study of equine body mechanics, or biomechanics, first and before we develop the horse’s movement. After the horse’s movement becomes straight, balanced and collected the rider is introduced to the movement and taught how to ride the movement. This process begins at the big, free walk and works it’s way up to the different transitions within each gait. Unlike much of today’s instruction, the rider should never be made to ride a movement he/she cannot ride balanced and with control. This means taking the time needed for the rider to learn the easiest movement first and before he/she asked for a bigger movement. Doesn’t this sound perfect? Being in control of the horse’s movement and learning at your own pace? What a great way to develop confidence in your riding ability not to mention having permission to take the time to get to know the horse during the process.
