#JimBairdAdventurer #NorthernManitoba #Overlanding Beyond the Height-of-Land: 25-Days High Adventure Camping in the Northern Manitoba Wild - E. 1- Overlanding & Float Plane Drop-Off: Canada's North holds some of the World’s last large expanses of wilderness. It’s brave wilderness, wild north, deep backcountry camping, remote wild camping in the full sense of the word etc. as it’s well off-grid and far from the road system. Canoeing trip planned, Ted Baird and I begin Overlanding in a Delica traveling along the Lake Superior North Shore, through to the floatplane base in Thompson, Northern Manitoba. Outfitting, including fishing tackle for Walleye packed, we head up a forest access road for Leaf Rapids with a shuttle driver in tow. In Leaf, we rendezvoused with a floatplane and fly to our drop-off point on a remote wilderness lake. After loading survival gear packed in dry bags and food barrels into our canoes, I eat pemmican for lunch and we begin paddling. We need to make it 35 kilometers per day over 25-days to reach Hudson Bay. Our route sees us first heading up the Barrington River, bushwhack portaging over a height-of-land and then heading down the South Seal and Seal Rivers through many large lakes. Polar Bear danger is a concern on and around the coast. If we'd made it as far as Hudson Bay, we'd take a boat shuttle to Churchill along the coast and from Churchill, the Muskeg Express train would deliver us back to Thompson where the shuttle driver who accompanied us to Leaf Rapids parked our vehicle. Planes, trains, automobiles, and boats were all used in the complicated logistics for this one! I hope you enjoy the series.
